What actually happens? The client will explain all the details of the situation which has developed and which now needs the Polygraph Test to distinguish truth from deception. The Polygraphist will then arrange a series of questions which will cover the problem completely. The subject will agree each question and will provide his or her answer to the question. The questions will be a mixture of relevant and irrelevant topics, but all will be closed, which is to say they can only be answered YES or NO. All questions will refer to fact rather than opinion. Having established and agreed the questions, anything from 10 to 25, the subject will then be connected to the instrument. Two convoluted rubber tubes are wrapped around the chest and abdomen. Two small sensors are attached to fingers of the right hand and a cuff is placed around the left upper arm. No clothing is removed and no electric current is passed through the body at any time during the Lie Detection Test. Once connected to the Polygraph, the Subject is then asked all the agreed questions. The instrument records the body reaction to those questions - the autonomic nervous reaction. A chart is produced, either electronically or on a paper graph, which is then interpreted by the Polygraphist. Thus, although the test may take hours, the time actually connected to the instrument for the Lie Detection Test is approximately two minutes. |
